Have you ever picked up a copy of a game and wondered what brew would best compliment your evening’s entertainment? Well, my friend, you are in luck! We’ve paired three brand new beers and one mead with games for the ultimate in tabletop enjoyment! All games, beers and mead are available right now at 42 Lounge, but if you want to stay up to date with our latest offerings, subscribe to our digital menu via Untappd!
First up, B. Nektar Meadery’s Ancient Soul, paired with Monarch. The rich, oaky undertones of this orange blossom honey mead pair well with your quest to earn the crown before any of your sisters. You’ll have to be more cunning than your opponent, harvesting opportunities as well as food while you coyly sip on this delicate, yet strong mead. Game supports 2-4 players and lasts about 45 minutes. If you sip lightly, you’ll have enough left in the bottle for a second match!
Next up: Shorts Double Magician and Sparkle Kitty. What? If you thought we would pair a floofy cider or a fruit beer with this game, you underestimated the power of the Double Magician. This medium-bodied beer with hints of toffee balance well with the citrus and roasty flavors, while staying just lighthearted enough to blend well with the feel of Sparkle Kitty. Part of the fun of this game is the inevitable flub and loss of points when someone trips over the cards’ tongue twisters… and the beer brings just enough ABV at 7.6% to loosen lips and get the giggles started. If your friends don’t enjoy this game… or this beer, you might want to move on down the bar and find new friends.
It’s never too early to start drinking holiday brews… and I mean that both in terms of time of day and day of the month. Now, if your family is anything like mine, you’re going to need a distraction to keep everyone from driving one another crazy. Save your holiday by bringing along a 6-pack of Fistmas by Revolution Brewing and Mafia de Cuba. This game takes the classic Mafia game and surrounds it with beautiful artwork. The cigar box becomes a secretive component of the game as players take a turn stealing diamonds, staying true to the family, being a driver, or acting as an undercover CIA agent . The passionate debate that follows will keep the party happily occupied for round after round, during which you can sip and savor this lovely ginger and orange peel beer with a beautiful malt profile. On second thought… grab two 6-packs, you’re gong to be here awhile.
King of Tokyo is a classic in the bar, and with good reason. It has a well-defined rule set that’s easy to pick up and explain, it offers competitive components with just the right amount of chance to keep things interesting– and who doesn’t want to pretend to be a giant robot or mutant monster whacking their opponents as they claim victory? Having played this game more than a few times, I felt that this game deserved a new, interesting beer to keep the rolls coming, and you’ll find layer after layer of exciting flavors in Midas Touch from Dogfish Head. Midas Touch is made with ingredients found in 2,700 year-old vessels from the tomb of King Midas, and it manages to expertly blur the line between beer, mead and chardonnay while still being incredibly drinkable at 9% ABV. It has just the right amount of sweet, yet finishes clean and dry, like your finishing move as you sweep your opponents off the board.
